How To Hire Your First Team Member Effectively.
As a business owner, you can't do everything yourself. If you want your business to grow, you need to learn how to delegate effectively. One way to delegate is to outsource tasks to a virtual assistant or other online support professional. This can free up your time so that you can focus on more important tasks, such as developing new products, services, or other revenue-generating tasks. By learning how to delegate effectively, you can free up your time so that you can focus on growing your business.
I see this all the time with my clients. They have too much on their plate and are overwhelmed. They know they need help but don't want to delegate because they think no one can do it as well as they can. This is a recipe for disaster. If you want to grow your business, you need to learn how to delegate effectively.
The best and most cost-effective way to delegate is to outsource tasks to a virtual assistant or other online support professional. This can free up your but don’t know where to start. Below are top tips on how to prepare your business for your first team member.
My Top Tips
1. Figure out what you can hand off to someone else. Make a list of all your day-to-day tasks that you do in your business and through the list add a star to each task only you can do. The rest should be outsourced. This may seem obvious, but it's important to be specific. For example, if you need help with social media, be specific about which platforms, what kind of content, how often, etc.
2. To make sure you save as much time and money as possible it is best to have processes in place. Do not wait for your VA to come on and expect them to create the processes exactly the way you would. This will take up so much time and money. Instead, for a week while you are doing each task write down the step-by-step process or SOP so you can hand over the SOPs and expect your VA to be able to complete the tasks with little hand-holding. When documenting your processes be sure to be as detailed as possible.
3. Set up a project management tool like Teamwork or Asana to 1. Track time 2. Avoid as much back-and-forth communication as possible. Create a project, assign tasks, and use the platform as your go-to communication guide.
4. You get what you pay for usually. Don’t be taken aback by the cost of hiring a team member and certainly don’t just hire the cheapest person. Typically a VA will cost anywhere between $25-40 an hour in the US. Those who charge more typically have more experience.
5. Once your VA is onboarded, give up control. They are there to take the day-to-day tasks off your plate. Give them control over the day-to-day.
